Just use FoodShareFilter, the app attaches the words This picture helps millions of people not to suffer hunger to encourage encourage your followers to join the fight against world hunger.
Instagram Has 100 Million Users

Despite changes to its privacy policy which led to backlash from its community in December, Instagram now has 100 million active users.

The Facebook-owned photo sharing company announced the news on its network yesterday along with the photo pictured left. Curiously the photo doesn’t seem to have a filter on it, despite the popularity of filters on the app.

Here is more from Instagram:

This isn’t just a milestone for us as a company, but one for the entire Instagram community. In honor of this, we want to hear your stories. Share your photos of what Instagram means to you and tag them #InstagramMeansToMe so we can hear your voices. We’ll feature some of our favorite photos right here on our account.

Last month, Instagram expanded its app to the web and now users can view their entire instagram stream online. But you still have to use the app to share photos.

You Can Now View Your Instagram Feed Online

Instagram announced today that it was expanding its web services so users can view their entire instagram stream online. You still have to use the app to take and add photos.

Your Instagram Feed on the web functions much like it does on your mobile phone. You can browse through the latest photos of people whom you follow with updates as people post new photos. Like photos by double clicking on them or pressing the like button. Or, engage in a conversation around a photo with inline commenting. Browse through pages of the most recent images to keep up on what’s happening with the people you follow in realtime.

The gradual move to desktop services does not mean the company wishes to abandon its mobile driven app. Instagram insists that the service is about “taking photos on the go” while additional desktop expansions allow users to access their photos on any device at any time.

This strategy will inevitably allow Instagram various streams of revenue since its purchase by Facebook. However, its parent company has shown that mobile advertising is more lucrative. Since desktop Instagram offers less than its mobile counterpart and it may inevitably be a stepping stone for an eventual Facebook integration.

This probably means the demise of Webstagram.

Instagram’s New Policies, Modified From User Feedback, Start Saturday

The Facebook-owned photo sharing app Instagram will roll out its new policy and terms of service on January 19th. The new policies have been amended since they were first announced after user outcry over a policy which would have given Instagram the right to sell your photos without payment or notification. (The whole fiasco cost the company a lot of users).

The Instagram blog today points out that, “nothing has changed about your photos’ ownership or who can see them.” Instead, Instagram points out that the new policies are designed to make the app more easily integrated with Facebook and to prevent spam. continued…

Blind Instagram User Not Interested in What His Photos Look Like

It’s not every day that an Instagram user not care what his photos look like. In the case of one blind user, Tommy Edison, the tool gives him a great opportunity to share images of what he is experiencing, despite his inability to see them.

Tommy uses Siri in order to access the touch-enabled buttons on his iPhone and voice dictation in order to add captions to his images. Like other Instagram users, Tommy also applies a filter to his images.

I don’t think I’d ever take pictures if I ask anybody what they looked like, you know, if they were any good or not.

Instagram Sees Active Daily Users Decline Dramatically

In the wake of privacy policy changes at Instagram, the popular photo sharing app has seen its daily active user count decline dramatically on Facebook.

Our sibling network AppData mapped the changes (chart embedded above, click to enlarge).

The New York Post has more: “Instagram users outraged over new rules made good on their threat to dump the popular photo-sharing app … Instagram, which peaked at 16.4 million active daily users the week it rolled out its policy change, had fallen to 12.4 million as of yesterday, according to the data. Last week, Instagram changed its terms of service to pave the way for advertising.”

5 Alternatives To Instagram

While Instagram may not really intend to sell your photos, if the Facebook-owned photo sharing site has left a bad taste in your mouth with its policy change, there are alternatives.

We’ve made a list of five photo-sharing apps that are worth checking out. Below we’ve listed the app and included links and the app’s description.

1. Flickr: “Capture and create stunning photos: Take photos with the app’s easy-to-use camera and make them your own with all new filters, editing features, and geo-tagging. Share your photos with anyone, anywhere: Instantly share with your Flickr groups and Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr or email contacts. You pick. Discover the world through photos: The most interesting images in the world live on Flickr. Rediscover the world and be inspired by the Flickr community of photo hobbyists.” continued…

Instagram: ‘It Is Not Our Intention To Sell Your Photos.’

Following controversy over its new privacy policy, Instagram has responded with a lengthy statement that “it is not our intention to sell your photos.”

The company had hoped “to experiment with innovative advertising,” and blamed confusion over language in the new terms.

Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom explained: “We are working on updated language in the terms to make sure this is clear. To provide context, we envision a future where both users and brands alike may promote their photos & accounts to increase engagement and to build a more meaningful following. Let’s say a business wanted to promote their account to gain more followers and Instagram was able to feature them in some way. In order to help make a more relevant and useful promotion, it would be helpful to see which of the people you follow also follow this business. In this way, some of the data you produce — like the actions you take (eg, following the account) and your profile photo — might show up if you are following this business.”

The letter concluded:

The language we proposed also raised question about whether your photos can be part of an advertisement. We do not have plans for anything like this and because of that we’re going to remove the language that raised the question. Our main goal is to avoid things likes advertising banners you see in other apps that would hurt the Instagram user experience. Instead, we want to create meaningful ways to help you discover new and interesting accounts and content while building a self-sustaining business at the same time.

How to Restore Instagram to Your Twitter Stream

If you want to take advantage of Instagram’s beautiful new tilt-shift features, but can’t get away from your Twitter stream, install this free Chrome extension, Instatwit, on your browser to enjoy the best of both worlds. Sorry Firefox and IE, this is only available for Chrome users.

Users on mobile could still experience the in-Twitter Instagram experience with apps like Tweetbot. Another workaround is by using this IFTTT recipe that bypasses Instagram’s turning off of Twitter cards.

Twitter’s new Aviary-powered photo filters and the impending photo war with Instagram and Facebook might be growing tepid already.

The site will roll out the new feature this week. Users can access their online profile, with the URL instagram.com/[username].

Here is more from Instagram’s blog: “Your web profile features a selection of your recently shared photographs just above your profile photo and bio, giving others a snapshot of the photos you share on Instagram. In addition, you can follow users, comment & like photos and edit your profile easily and directly from the web.”

‘Instacane’ Tells The Tale Of Hurricane Sandy In Images

Instacane.com, a site built by Facebook employee Chris Akerman and software engineer Peter Ng, is documenting the progress of Hurricane Sandy through a collection of individual updates on Instagram. The site follows the hashtags of Instagram users affected by Sandy and displays an array of images from different people experiencing the storm.

The photos are a great detour from the giant graphics we’ve been seeing that show most of the Eastern Seaboard all in red. They show sobering images from the trenches of the storm like this photo (pictured left) from hoeboma of Atlantic City flooding and shots of flooding in Manhattan.

It’s also got a collection of images of hurricane preparations, from empty store shelves to cabinets well stocked with water, packaged foods and beer. There are, of course, some silly pics. (Via TechCrunch).

Instagrille Brings Instagram to Your Windows PC

I think the true measure of the popularity of a mobile app is when someone releases a desktop version. Instagram is now one of the handful of apps which can make that claim.

May I present Instagrille.

This app seems to have been out for a while now, but I just heard about it today. It’s an HTML5 based app which is designed to run on the Pokki app framework. It’s free, and it lets heck your feed, see your notifications, and make comments. You even have the option of downloading photos to your computer.

Now, I’m not one to do a lot of photography, but I can say that this is a sweet app. It’s remarkably lightweight, and when minimized it runs in my taskbar without using any appreciable resources. It’s definitely worth getting.

If you don’t have a PC, you can find a similar app for OSX called Carousel. It costs $2 in iTunes.
