NetGalley Expands into the UK

NetGalley has signed its first publishing partner in Great Britain. Faber & Faber will soon be using NetGalley’s platform to offer review copies of the books it publishes.

The first titles will be released in September, and F&F plans to have a rolling list of 20 titles available at any one time. Faber & Faber is one of over a hundred publishers who have signed with NetGalley to support the over 36,000 reviewers and professional readers who have now signed up with the service to read the eBooks that NetGalley offers titles in Epub and Kindle formats.

On a related note, Booki.sh, the cloud based reading platform, started offering a competing service back in April. Any publisher who agrees to have Booki.sh distribute its titles can also offer free review copies to anyone they wish.

Melville House Joins NetGalley

Melville House Publishing has partnered with NetGalley to release digital galleys. The publisher joins the likes of HarperCollins, Hachette, Penguin, and Random House, who also just joined the network.

The publisher has launched with 10 titles including: Derek Raymond‘s He Died With His Eyes Open, Stephane Reynaud‘s Rotis and Faithful Ruslan: The Story of a Guard Dog by Georgi Vladimov.

The way that NetGalley works is that professional readers can request to read these digital galleys from these publishers. Its members are mainly reviewers, book bloggers, librarians, booksellers and teachers.

Random House Now On NetGalley

The Random House Publishing Group, a division of Random House, has partnered with NetGalley. Under the terms of the partnership, the publisher will release digital versions of its galleys through the digital distributor to book professionals. Random House joins more than a hundred other publishers including: Hachette, HarperCollins and Penguin.

The launch title for this new partnership is from Random House’s Ballantine Books imprint. THE ECHO MAN by Richard Montanari, is a thriller that is coming out in September, exclusively as an eBook, so it makes sense that the galley be released digitally.

NetGalley Has Restored Kindle Support

The digital galley service NetGalley announced today that it’s once again able to support the Amazon Kindle. It had removed Kindle support some months ago, but never explained why. The cause appeared to be some kind of conflict with Amazon, but this has not been confirmed.

The good news here is that the renewed Kindle support doesn’t present a major inconvenience for users. You can send galleys to your Kindle over email, and it works the exact same way as any other document sent to your Kindle. I was half expecting to learn that the restored service would be tied into the Kindle lending ability. Publishers and Amazon might have been pushing for it as a way of restricting how long users can keep a copy. Right now there’s no limit, but I’m sure at least some publishers would like one.
