Study Like a Scholar, Scholar

Last year Old Spice had a viral advertising campaign where a half dressed man answered questions in videos posted to the Old Spice Youtube channel. The ads were remarkably popular and they spawned a number of satires, including the one above.

This video was shot at the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University. It came through my Twitter stream again today, and after I learned that several people had never seen it I thought it worth posting here just to brighten your day.

Siri Fails as a Marriage Counselor

Just when you think that all the jokes have been made about Siri, the virtual assistant on the iPhone 4S, someone comes up with a new one.

College Humor posted this video yesterday. It’s a satirical take on what might happen if Siri got in between 2 feuding spouses. While the video isn’t suitable for small children, it is hilariously funny and it is almost a plausible situation.

Apple’s Secret Leaked – New iPhone Expected Tomorrow

While there is nothing from Apple to support it, tomorrow is likely to see the launch of the new iPhone 5. (Bits and pieces of information have been leaking from everywhere, so it’s pretty much an open secret at this point.)

The satirical Joy of Tech blog has put together their estimate of how tomorrow’s festivities will go. You might see Neil Patrick Harris juggling flaming tennis balls while riding a unicycle. JofT also beleive that the iPhone 6 is being held in reserve just in case the presentation needs more oomph. And then there are the bouncers which are there just to keep Gizmodo away.

You can click on the graphic at right to see a larger version or click through to Joy of Tech to read it there. It’s really funny.

Harry Potter and the Screwball Teen Comedy

With all the bad news lately of Borders closing, Apple tightening its grip on iTunes, and what not, I thought we could all use a laugh. The above trailer was made from parts of the 6th Harry Potter movie, The Half Blood Prince. The trailer promotes the movie as a teen comedy, and it does a very good job of showing how a soundtrack affects your perceptions and that context is everything. All these clips are from the movie but it’s not a comedy (obviously).

But the trailer is quite funny. (Via Thewlis Rox)

CSI: Discworld

Have you ever wanted to see a crime drama with less pseudo-science and more silliness, which was was set on a flat disc-shaped world balanced on the back of four elephants standing on the back of a giant turtle flying through space? It’s your lucky day!

The fantasy author Terry Pratchett recently signed a deal for a new TV series based on his Discworld novels. The new show will be a CSI style crime of the week mystery centered on the City Watch police force of Ankh-Morpork. Since this is Discworld, the show will likely be satirical comedy, not the usual drama you might expect from CSI.

The main focus of the series will be set in the bustling, highly mercantile, largely untrustworthy and always vibrant city of Ankh-Morpork and will follow the day-to-day activities of the men, women, trolls, dwarves, vampires and several other species who daily pound its ancient cobbles (and, of course, Igor in the forensics department).

It’s also going to be hilarious. It will be made by Prime Focus Productions, the people who made the three existing Discworld miniseries. All 3 series are remarkably close to the spirit of the Discworld series.

They’ve just signed the deal, so don’t expect to see this for a year or more.

The Traditional Publishing Bingo Card

It’s only been 2 days since the digital publishing bingo card and someone has added a second satirical card. This one was uploaded to Flickr by Shmuel 510.  Like the last one, this card is based on the standard bingo design, only instead of numbers it uses cliches taken from common arguments about publishing.
