Starbucks Customers Can Now Consume 15 Free New York Times Articles Each Day

The New York Times is lowering the pay walls for coffee drinkers by partnering with popular coffee chain Starbucks. Users logged into the chain’s wi-fi can get access to 15 free articles each day – a massive amount of words per cup in my opinion.

It’s not a complete free for all though, only articles from Top News, Business, Tecnology, Most-Emailed, and daily special print sections will be available. Jim Romenesko quickly pointed out that he’s been using the Time Readers to get free content for ages, so that’s worth trying if you don’t want to pay for your news. There are also plenty of other ways to get free access to various NY Times content, but why not just hop over to Starbucks and enjoy some overly sugared lattes and charge your smartphone while you read The NYTimes, The Economist, and The Wall Street Journal on Starbucks Digital Network?

Wireless Charging Gets a Boost of Support from Starbucks and Google

Duracell’s wireless power consortium, PMA (Power Matters Alliance) announced that it has obtained some important partners in its wireless power ventures. Google, AT&T, and Starbucks have recently joined PMA’s wireless mission, not to mention government board observers the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) and Energy Star.

Wireless charging devices currently exists in small pockets of technological utopias, but imagine every surface as a possible wireless charging station for all of your mobile devices. Since Starbucks announced that it was embedding Duracell Powermats into tables at 17 of its Boston locations, support for PMA’s wireless power has tripled in the past month.

As part of the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) Industry Connections program, the PMA is fleshing out a suite of standards that provide advanced wireless power – called ‘Power 2.0’ – and encouraging its expanding roster of partners to adopt and deploy charging products to market that comply with the new universal specifications.

Starbucks Now Selling Square’s Card Readers

Starbucks has expanded its partnership with Square by offering Square’s mobile readers for $10 – essentially free if you count the $10 Square rebate. Currently, the mobile readers are already available in stores like Apple and Best Buy. Square users can also order a free mobile reader from their website, which ships via UPS.

The mobile readers from Square allows you to accept credit card payments from your iOS and Android devices with a 2.75% fee per swipe. Businesses can also sign up at $275 per month. These rates are not ideal for large companies but might be helpful if you don’t like using Paypal for one-on-one transactions and next day deposits.

Currently, Square is popular within the coffee and latte market in San Francisco. It won’t be long until every single coffee purchase is processed through the financial start-up.

Starbucks’ New ‘Pick of the Week’ Free eBook Not Going so Well

If you’ve ever bought a drink at Starbucks then you probably know about its promotions, including “Pick of the Week.” For some time now Starbucks has been giving away a free mp3 each week to customers.

Earlier this week Starbucks expanded the program to include eBooks. The first eBook to be given away is by Erin Morgenstein, and it’s called Night Circus. The free eBook, like the free mp3s, can be downloaded with a promo code that you can find on a card in stores.
