Verizon Offers Android Games Subscription for $6 a Month

Earlier today Verizon unveiled Gametanium, their new subscription service for Android games.

The service covers 50 tablet games and 100 games for smartphones, including Doodle God, Fruit Ninja, Plans vs Zombies, and World of Goo. The cost is $6 a month, a fee which will be bundled with your Verizon Wireless account.

This sounds like a good deal, but like any Verizon offer you need to read the fine print.  The subscription is per device, not per account. For those of us with more than one Android device the cost will add up fast.

I’m also not convinced of the value. This service will cost $72 a year, and you could buy 30 or more games with that money.

F&SF Magazine is Now Available Exclusively on the Kindle

Actually, it’s not available just yet. The staff at Fantasy & Science Fiction Magazine didn’t quite get the Amazon subscription up and running before cancelling subscriptions purchased elsewhere.

Fictionwise sent out an email announcing the cancellation yesterday, but it was rather terse: We want to let you know that the publisher of “The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction” is no longer offering this magazine through Fictionwise.com or eReader.com. We have refunded your account for the remaining issues on your subscription. We’re sorry for this inconvenience. We invite you to browse our magazine selection for other publications in this genre, such as “Analog Science Fiction & Fact.” F&SF confirmed the switch to Amazon on its forums.

I hope this doesn’t kill the magazine. The changeover was very poorly handled, and there’s a good chance that a lot of customers won’t bother to look for alternative sources.

Gizmodo Was Wrong!

Do you recall the hot story from yesterday about magazine subscriptions on the Kindle? It turns out that there’s no story.

Gizmodo posted a brief article yesterday about what happens when you cancel a subscription on your Kindle. According to G’s source (who was wrong), all back issues were deleted when the subscription is cancelled.

This simply is not true, and it didn’t even sound true yesterday. I set the story aside until I could find more information. Luckily for me, Andrys Basten of A Kindle World blog knew better. Her explanation is rather long,  so it is embedded after the break.
