What the Creative Rights Caucus Means for App Developers

At the Digital Hollywood conference in Los Angeles last week, the nonprofit Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) held a panel discussion about “Copyright, Content & Congress.”

Amelia Wang, the chief of staff for U.S. Representative Judy Chu, talked about the Creative Rights Caucus initiative that Congresswoman Chu helped create. CCC’s Chris Kenneally asked how the caucus would help creators, and received an app-specific example from Wang. Check it out:

the congresswoman serves on the House IP subcommittee and when the SOPA debate was happening, she was right in the middle of the whole thing. During this debate, she noticed that the voice of the creator, the individual creator, was not heard or understood. So she saw this need to advocate for their rights, specifically. The caucus – basically the core principle is protecting creative rights. The congresswoman also sees an opportunity to stress that creators are where innovation begins. Technology cannot exist without creative works or vice versa. Truly, it’s a symbiotic relationship … Take, for instance, app developers, who basically create in the tech space. With the dramatic growth of this industry, they too have now become increasingly concerned about protecting their IP – intellectual property. At the end of the day, we can all agree that protecting creators’ rights is in the best interest of everyone. It’s of upmost importance. It drives American ingenuity and creates jobs. In the creative sector alone, it creates 5.1 million jobs.

Google Play Now on Nook

Barnes & Noble’s Nook Media is bringing Google Play to its Nook HD devices. Previously you could only access Google’s Android marketplace on the Nook through workarounds. Now customers have direct access to the Android store which offers more than 700,000 apps, millions of songs and movies & TV shows. This is great for Nook users as Barnes & Noble’s app offerings were miniscule compared to Google.

The Nook devices will also include a Chrome browser, Gmail, YouTube, Google Search and Google Maps. The Google market and tools will be available to all new and existing NOOK HD and NOOK HD+ customers in the US and the UK through an update.

William Lynch, chief executive officer of Barnes & Noble, stated: “Now with access to more than 700,000 apps and the best reading experience available, NOOK HD and NOOK HD+ are must-see products for entertainment lovers looking for high-quality tablets at incredibly low prices.”

The customer who is lucky enough to purchase the 50 billionth app will win a $10,000 App Store Gift Card. In addition, those people who download one of the first 50 apps after they hit 50 billion, will win a US$500 App Store gift card. You can also enter to win without making a purchase by sharing personal data at this link.

CNET has more about Apple’s history of App Store promos:

Apple’s last big contest for the App Store was for the 25 billion benchmark last March. Chunli Fu, a customer from Qingdao, China was winner, and nabbed a $10,000 gift card and a trip to one of Apple’s stores to pick it up. More recently, Apple paid out a 10,000 Euro iTunes gift card for the 25th billion song sold on iTunes back in February.

How a 24-Year-Old Creator Went from YouTube to Making a Feature Film

At the Digital Hollywood conference in Los Angeles this week, 24-year-old Smiley filmmaker Michael Gallagher explained how he built a career from YouTube to making a feature film. He had this simple mantra for creators to memorize: “I am open to anything.”

We’ve posted the trailer for Smiley below, a horror movie and Gallagher’s first film. Storytellers and creators of all kinds can learn from his example. Gallagher explained:

Don’t be afraid of new platforms and collaborating with already established folks. That’s how I got into it. I’m 24, so I’m pretty young. But out of film school (AKA my high school) I came up here and started working with Mahalo. I wasn’t a big web guy at the time, I was 18 and I started working on their web show, Mahalo Daily. I did all the grunt work. I shot on miniDV tapes, we did shows about cupcakes and I edited them, produced and I did everything I had to do to make content. We were doing five shows a week.

Mayor of London Boosting City’s Technology Startups with $33 Million in Funding

Technology startups are getting a boost in London – the city’s Mayor, Boris Johnson, has announced new funding for companies that are based in the city. The $33.6 million venture capital, MMC London Fund, is partially funded by $11 million of public money which will be matched by private investment.

London’s small to medium companies are a vital component of this city’s economy, supporting significant numbers of jobs. It is a top priority for me that these entrepreneurial enterprises receive practical support to thrive and grow, not least as many have the potential to become major employers in the future. This innovative equity fund is using public and private money in order to offer much needed financing when more traditional routes are not available.

The new $11 million will be targeting London based businesses, especially in areas like deprived East London – marketed by London as Tech City in order to grow the existing organic tech scene.

Free Weekend Workshops for Teens Who Want to Learn to Code

The Professional Association for Design (AIGA/NY) is providing free digital workshop for teens. The pilot weekend course taught Harlem students the basics of coding, robotics, and graphic design with a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and three workshops: Make a Mobile App, Electronics Prototyping with Little Bits, and Be a Graphic Designer.

Our Inspire/Make Teen Program is a series of free weekend classes for high-school (grades 9-12) students who want to learn how to design and develop digital and electronic media. We’ll cover a breadth of disciplines, including graphic design for digital interfaces, creating apps and content for mobile and tablets, and physical prototyping with electronic components.

The next workshop will be in collaboration with the Brooklyn Library to create iBooks. Keep an eye on AIAGA/NY’s events page if you are in the New York area.

Reddit Now Accepting Bitcoins as Real Currency

Money is not entirely meaningless, but I am beginning to think it’s less tangible than my Facebook friendships. First Facebook announced that it was issuing its own credit card, then Amazon concocted its own Kindle coins, and now Reddit has announced it will be accepting Bitcoins for premium service. I need an app just to maintain the copious varieties of currencies that have flooded the interwebs.

What exactly can you purchase with Bitcoins? On Reddit, Bitcoins are worth perks and privileges. For $3.99/mo, users can eliminate ads, save comments, and view more comments per page. There are over 200 million USD worth of Bitcoins in circulation, and its value has doubled since the beginning of 2013 from $13.50 to over $27.00 (USD). This trend is likely to continue given the influence of Reddit users on politics and technology.

Naturally, Redditors are already using Bitcoins to fund on-line stripping. Users are posting partially nude photos along with their Bitcoin account where tippers can send Bitcoins to encourage more stripping. This only goes to prove that sex, money, and the internet will be constant no matter which currency you choose.

Facebook Developing More Ways to Track Your Every Move On Mobile

Social giant, Facebook, is looking to create an app that can track you even when the app is turned off, according Bloomberg. The technology is not novel – Ross Wickman pointed out that CliqFindr has similar means for tracking users. That said, Facebook cannot track your location if you do not give the app permission.

Facebook’s privacy policy regarding tracking GPS and location data:

We may put together your current city with GPS and other location information we have about you to, for example, tell you and your friends about people or events nearby, or offer deals to you that you might be interested in. We may also put together data about you to serve you ads that might be more relevant to you.

When we get your GPS location, we put it together with other location information we have about you (like your current city). But we only keep it until it is no longer useful to provide you services, like keeping your last GPS coordinates to send you relevant notifications.

Windows Releases Blink Camera App For Burst Mode Photography

Microsoft Research has developed an app for photographers who have an affinity for fast-moving subjects. The Blink app takes 16 photos for every click of your shutter button. Burst mode is a common feature in DSLR cameras, so it’s a great app for Windows 8 photographers.

The app uses image stabilization technology to remove undesirable motion blur, and the resulting photo set is shown in a timeline that you can ‘scrub’ back and forth to view each frame. Users can choose to keep their best shot or all 16 photos. The set itself can be great for creating stop-motion Gifs using GIFPAL. Watch a tutorial of the new app below.

Verizon Offers Pay-As-You-Go Option for Smartphone Users

Verizon unveiled a budget-friendly option for smartphone users – $70 per month of talk and text and up to 2GB of data. The announcement specifically names 3G phones, but does not clearly state whether 4G phones are supported. Since Verizon has been advertising its faster 4G network, this plan may not be the best option for new phone buyers who can optimize 4G technologies on Verizon’s advanced 4G wireless network.

Simply pay upfront to enjoy unlimited talk, messaging and data of your choice on our Prepaid 3G smartphone plans. You can renew your prepaid phone plan for another 30 days by paying the monthly plan fee prior to your monthly renewal date. If you go over your data allowance in your 30—day month period, purchase an extra 1GB of data for $20 when your data balance reaches 100MB or lower or just pay 5¢ per MB.

You don’t have to purchase a new smartphone to take advantage of the new data plan, so it’s perfect for old phones or expired contracts. T-Mobile has much more flexible monthly rates so if you use around 2GB of data per month, it’s only $60. Further, T-Mobile’s 3G network is comparable if not faster than Verizon’s 3G. T-Mobile’s no contract rate for $70 per month gives you access to their 4G network and unlimited data. Users could also check this handy resource for finding each specific location’s optimal carrier and cell towers.
