Life just got sweeter for smartphone users. Donut chain Dunkin’ Donuts has launched a new app that includes a mobile payment feature. Like the Starbucks app, the Dunkin’ Donuts app requires users to purchase a gift card which will show up on their app. Then they can use that credit at the point of sale by showing it to the clerk who will scan the barcode on the phone.
The free app, which is available for iOS and Android devices, also has a location finder device, so that users can find a location for the fast food restaurant close to where they are.
Like most apps these days, the Dunkin’ app has social components as well. One cool function is that users can buy Dunkin’ Donuts credits for their friends via text message, email and Facebook. This is a smart push from a marketing perspective, because it encourages sharing and potentially taps into new users, as gift recipients will have to download the app to take advantage of the virtual gift card.
