French Publishers Negotiate With Apple Over In-App Royalty

Eight French publications, including daily newspaper Le Figaro and weekly newspaper le Nouvel Observateur, have teamed up to negotiate with Apple over the tech giant’s 30% cut on in-app sales.

Apple Insider has more: “The participating parties reportedly plan to keep their publications from Apple’s Newsstand application, which will be a part of the forthcoming iOS 5 software update. Newsstand will sell newspapers and magazines much like Apple sells e-books through its iBookstore for the iPad and iPhone.”

Apple’s new subscription rules, which came into effect in July, require vendors to give Apple 30% of any revenue collected on content sold in-app. This rule change prompted Amazon, Google, Kobo and Barnes & Noble, among others to disarm their app purchase functionality.
