Google Play Passes 15 Billion App Downloads

Here’s a story from the “oh, yeah, that happened” department.

App stores track their success by any number of milestones, including users, apps offered, number of copies sold, and so on. The milestones don’t mean much to anyone who doesn’t work there, but blogs still cover it because they are interesting news stories. But it looks like we missed one.

Some time in the past few weeks the Play Store passed 15 billion apps downloaded. I’m not sure when; Google didn’t announce it until long after the fact. But it’s still big news; that’s 2 app downloads for each person on the planet. It’s also an impressive accomplishment, considering that the last milestone was 11 billion downloads, which Google reached some time in January. They’re seeing over a billion new downloads a month, and the rate is likely increasing.
