How To Add Read-Aloud To Your iBook In The iBookstore

Back in June, Apple released Version 1.3 of iBooks (the latest version), which added a read-aloud feature for books in the iBookstore. The narration feature is generally used in children’s books to help young readers learn to read.

Apple explains how you can create such a book in an email sent to publishers this week.

It reads: “You can create a Read Aloud book by adding Media Overlays to a Fixed Layout book. A Media Overlay is an EPUB-specific Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL) file that can be used to sync audio with text, allowing readers to follow along as the words are read aloud. An additional feature gives you the option of highlighting words as they are spoken.”
