How To Download eBooks From Your Local Library

Buying an eReader doesn’t mean that you have to cut ties with your local library. In fact, the opposite is true.

Overdrive has partnerships with more than 13,000 libraries, so the chances are good that your local library is on there. The way you download eBooks is through their app, which works on iPhones, iPads, BlackBerry and Android devices. Through the app, you can find your local library and click the ‘Get Books’ option. Once you find the eBook that you’d like to check out, you go through the same process you would in person –you give them your library card. You can then download the eBook to your device where you can read in from within the app for a limited time period, usually about a week or two, depending on the library’s policy. Oh and if the eBook is checked out, you have to wait until it becomes available, just like in a physical library.

Pretty soon, you’ll be able to do this on your Kindle too. Through a partnership between Amazon and OverDrive, you will also be able to check out eBooks from Kindles and Kindle apps. The companies announced the partnership last month, but have yet to roll it out. One additional feature the Amazon library books will offer is the ability to make notes in the eBook and save these notes to your Amazon account. These notes won’t appear for the next user that checks the book out, however, they will show up next time you check out the book or if you decide to buy the book from Amazon.
