Hulu has a rival – Popcornflix.com

A new movie streaming site launched a few days ago,and while it’s not big enough to be a real threat to Hulu, it does show an interesting trend for the industry.

Screen Media Ventures, a movie distributor, started PopcornFlix.com to capitalize on its collection of independently produced films. The site has around a few hundred movies now, and the selection is expected to grow to around 1,500 by the end of the year.

The PopcornFlix.com collection spans comedy, romance and horror, as well as foreign releases. Screen Media believes it can add additional revenue to its main business of sending movies to art houses and cinemas by building an ad-supported streaming video service.

Like Hulu, this site is supported by adverts. The possible ads for each film include pre-roll, spot ads and banner ads. Ads will run about every 10 minutes during a movie, which means that users watching a 90-minute film will see about nine ads.
