IBM engineers spent 4 years and countless millions of dollars building Watson, a supercomputer which could win Jeopardy!, and now those same engineers are working on shoehorning Watson into a smartphone.

SFGate is reporting that IBM is working on a new version of Watson. Watson 2.0 is part of IBM’s plan to tap new markets and boost revenue in business analytics.  The new Watson is going to have sufficiently low CPU and power requirements that it will be able to run on tablets and smartphones.

Here’s more from the article: “Bernie Meyerson, IBM vice president of innovation, envisions a voice-activated Watson that answers questions, like a supercharged version of Apple’s Siri personal assistant. A farmer could stand in a field and ask his phone, “When should I plant my corn?” He would get a reply in seconds, based on location data, historical trends and scientific studies.”

IBM is also hoping to give Watson 2.0 sensors so it can better detect and respond to the local environment. For example, they’d like Watson to integrate camera input into user queries so it can do a better job answering the question.
