Is Apple Planning a Media-Related Event in NYC?

There’s a hot rumor going around this morning about Apple, and it has something to do with eBooks.

According to a number of industry sources, Apple will be holding a media event later this month. There’s no solid info yet on what they will announce, but TechCrunch is reporting that “the event will not involve any hardware at all and instead will focus on publishing and eBooks (sold through Apple’s iBooks platform) rather than iAds. Attendance will also be more publishing industry-oriented than consumer-focused.” If true, then this event will be a far cry from any past Apple event, nearly all of which were focused on consumer products.

AllThingsD has another source who told them that this event definitely isn’t hardware related. It’s not going to be the iPad 3 or the iTV, so they concluded that we could seem “some kind of advertising or even publishing announcement, which might be the case, since Apple SVP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue is reportedly involved.”

There’s no word yet on when the event will take place, but the fact there are 2 inside sources does lend a lot of weight to the rumor. Also, consider the timing of the leak. CES is next week, and once again Apple has manged to upstage the trade show. This is exactly what they did with the original iPad launch 2 years ago. Everyone at CES 2010 talked about the Apple event, and that’s probably going to happen here, too.
