Lonely Planet Launches Interactive Travel eBooks

Lonely Planet released its first interactive travel eBooks called Discover. The books are designed liked a guidebook and is full of images, tips from locals and suggested itineraries.
But unlike a print guidebook, the eBooks include more than 3,000 hyperlinks so that readers can make hotel reservations and visit the restaurant websites. Readers can also search for additional information in Google and Wikipedia. Every chapter has a landing page with a hyperlinked table of contents.
Lonely Planet currently has five interactive eBooks available. This includes: Great Britain, Ireland, Spain, Italy and France. They have an additional seven releases slated for release this year.
John Boris, Executive Vice President of Lonely Planet told BlackBook Magazine that the books are best experienced on the iPad. The eBook will include updates from time to time. He said: “Our traditional publishing cycle for the print guides is every 2 years, but with ebooks we have the opportunity to update in real time. However, unlike apps, ebook updates aren’t pushed out to the end user, and readers will have to repurchase the new edition.”
