Lonely Planet To Revamp App Strategy

Looking for a travel app? Lonely Planet’s probably got it (or will have it) as they revamp their app platform in the coming months.

Brice Gosnell, VP & publisher, Lonely Planet Americas, told AppNewser today at Book Expo, that the publisher has plans to revamp its app program, as they look at feedback from customers about what kinds of content they want in apps. Gosnell said that there are various stages in the travel cycle — the planning stages, the booking stages, the travel and coming home — and he said that they plan to look at what kinds of content works best in what stage.

In the meantime, the publisher has lots of cool new apps available. For example, they recently launched a series of new country guide apps for the iPhone, which includes Italy, Ireland, France, Spain, Australia and Costa Rica.

The apps are designed to be resources while you are on-the-go and include things like expert recommendations on where to eat, drink, sleep and shop, as well as detailed maps that you can zoom in on for the entire country which don’t require data. They’ve also got suggest itineraries on different regions in each country, just like Lonely Planet print guidebooks.

Gosnell also tipped us off that Lonely Planet plans to make digital editions of its Road Map print series, which includes suggested itineraries say for 5 days in Tuscany or Tuscany with kids, and so forth. This app series, which will have updated color photos and more is coming next year.
