New eBook Reading Program Launched in NYC – eBook Buddy

Mentoring programs have been around since time immemorial, and there have always been ones that help children learn how to read. And now there’s a mentoring program that crosses the digital divide.

eBook Buddy is the brain child of AllOurChildren, an educational non-for profit group based in New York City. Their goal is to help kids do better in school by teaching them the skills and self confidence to succeed.

The eBook Buddy program launched last year with a pilot program of 25 mentors and students. When the pilot concluded in march it was widely considered a success. The program launched publicly in October, and registration unfortunately closed in November. That’s a shame; I would have loved to help promote it.

Right now volunteers are in training, and when they are done they will be paired with a third grade student. Most contact will be by email, and the mentors and students will discuss what the students are reading. In last year’s program, the mentors and students exchanged 3 letters, and that will be repeated with the current program.

Do you know of any other programs like this? eBook Buddy is the first that I have encountered, but I bet there were others before it.
