PayPal Lifts Censorship Ban
After threatening to close the accounts of online booksellers who sell content that includes rape, incest and bestiality, PayPal has rescinded its appeal. The eBay owned payments processing company will now allow sites including Smashwords to sell content without being subject to censorship.
The National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC), an organization who along with the Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFFE) had pleaded with eBay to stop PayPal’s censorship. Joan Bertin, executive director of NCAC released this statement after PayPal lifted the censorship ban: “This decision recognizes the important principle that neither PayPal nor any other company involved in payment processing has any business telling people what they should read.”
In February, digital publishing site Smashwords had to quickly change its terms of service regarding erotic fiction after PayPal threatened to stop accepting payments for the site. Without sharing many details, Coker wrote on Smashwords’ site earlier this week that he had met with PayPal and that Smashwords would be reinstating its pre-censored terms of service.
