Pinterest Integrates Travel and Mapping with New ‘Place Pins’

Pinterest’s latest update is a mapping tool perfect for travel planning and urban exploration. Called ‘Place Pins,’ the new mapping tool also includes more social additions, like the ability to send pins to another user, much like a message. However, seeing how some users have millions of followers, it might be annoying to be on the receiving end of too many messages or pins.

About a year ago, we noticed Pinners creating more and more boards around the vacations they’re planning, special places near where they live and sites they want to see someday. In fact, every day people Pin about 1.5 million places, and now there are more than 750 million Pins of these destinations on Pinterest. We asked ourselves, how can we help people turn their travel inspiration into reality? Today, we’re taking a first step toward that goal with Place Pins.

One very notable aspect of the new feature is the integration with travel agencies and travel retailers who were brought on board to create their own ‘Place’ boards of where to travel and what to buy.  Pinterest has conveniently shared a few branded boards of travel tips to help you get started with some Pinspiration.

Overall, the new feature looks exciting and very easy to use. The pins, the maps, and the relatively quick response time for the new feature is admirable. However, if you’re spending too much time on Pinterest, it might mean a time drain. Pinterest is aware of this. Pinterest users were invited to the start-up’s headquarters in San Francisco Wednesday evening for the big announcement. At the party, 150 Pinners were served  cocktails in mason jars, given free postcards and stamps for sending actual snail mail, and encouraged to make custom coasters at an art station – much like a typical Pinterest board. While there were plenty of press present, Pinners were notably happy to see the new feature, which integrates with their existing boards for travel planning.
