Russian eReader sales almost doubled in 2010

The US eReader market isn’t the only one seeing exceptional growth. 470,000 eReaders were sold in Russia in 2010, which is a dramatic increase over the 20k thousand sold in 2009. Records also show that only 60,000 in 2008, which means there was nearly an 8 fold increase in only 2 years.
eReader prices are also dropping in Russia, with most devices averaging a 30% decrease. Pocketbook continues to dominate the market with a 40% share, followed by Sony (29%), Lbook (12%) and other manufacturers.
On the other hand, publishers are also seeing a rise in piracy, and they blame it for the decline in print sales. “It’s the pirates who are killing the book business, not the eBooks,” said Vladimir Obruchev, the director of the non-fiction group at EKSMO. “It’s virtually impossible to convict people who distribute illegal eBooks because their server could be located anywhere.”
