Seth Godin is trying out a new marketing idea for his next book, Poke the Box. This is the title that he’s publishing in partnership with Amazon as part of his new imprint, The Domino Project.

He’s trying to get people to sign up for the free online newsletter. He’s promised that for every 5,000 newsletter subscribers, he’ll lower the pre-order price of the Kindle edition of Poke the Box. Right now the price is $7.99, which is 2 bucks less than the starting price. (According to the little tracker on his site, he’s about to hit 15,000 subscribers so the price will soon go down to $6.99.)

He’s betting that a high enough percentage of  the newsletter subscribers will decide to pre-order the ebook to make up for the discount. He’s also promised that if 45,000 people sign up for the newsletter, he’ll lower the pre-order price to $1.

So will this marketing idea work? Time will tell.
