Sharp To Launch eBookstore In U.S. In 2011

Sharp is gearing up for CES, which starts tomorrow, where the electronics maker plans to show off its new Galapagos tablet, a 10.8-inch Linux-based touchscreen device.

The Galapagos will come with a cloud-based bookstore service now, which is currently available in Japan. Sharp said in a press release that it would “initiate an e-media business including both tablet and content offerings in the U.S. in 2011.”

The eBookstore will sell books, games, movies and music. eBooks will be available in Sharp’s proprietary XMDF format, as well as in the ePub format. The device will store all downloaded content on a micro SD card, for access outside of Wi-Fi enabled areas.

Engadget is reporting that the device recently passed through FCC testing, so this could be here very soon.
