Controversy Arises Over Comic Censorship in comiXology App

When SAGA #12, a comic book by Brian K. Vaughan, hit bookshelves this week, it was not released in the popular comiXology app. Vaughan complained about this on his publisher’s Tumblr page. He wrote:

Unfortunately, because of two postage stamp-sized images of gay sex, Apple is banning tomorrow’s SAGA #12 from being sold through any iOS apps. This is a drag, especially because our book has featured what I would consider much more graphic imagery in the past, but there you go. Fiona and I could always edit the images in question, but everything we put into the book is there to advance our story, not (just) to shock or titillate, so we’re not changing shit.

Vaughan encouraged readers to check out his book by purchasing the print version or by downloading it elsewhere.

David Steinberger, CEO/co-founder of comiXology responded to this and explained that Apple didn’t actually ban the content. comiXology decided not to publish it because they didn’t think Apple would let it through. He wrote: continued…

Tips From David Steinberger of ComiXology At Media App Summit

At Mediabistro’s Media App Summit today David Steinberger, CEO/co-founder of digital comic book publishing company comiXology, revealed how he built a digital comic book company that owns 85-95 percent of digital comic book market, competing directly with Apple, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon. The company grew from releasing about 100 digital comics a month in 2009 and to releasing 1,278 books a month today.

With the vision, “bring comics to everyone everywhere,” Steinberger walked through how the company upgraded its app from Version 2 to Version 3. This update tripled the app’s engagement rate. Here are some tips from his presentation:

1. Think about the material and how a consumer will be thinking about that material. Steinberger recommends to think about what is unique about the content that you are providing and think about how a consumer would be most likely go deeper. For example, reading one issue of a comic book would likely make a reader go to the next issue or jump to another comic with a similar character. continued…

ComiXology CEO David Steinberger Talks Digital Comics

The iPad and other tablets have made it possible to bring comic books to life as eBooks. In fact, comic book apps have been dominating Apple’s Top Grossing Apps list in the book category for the past couple of months. We caught up with David Steinberger, President/CEO of ComiXology, a company that designs digital comic books for Marvel Comics among others, to discuss how ComiXology is addressing the growing digital comic book market.

EBN: When formatting comic books for tablets, what elements are you trying to preserve?

DS: Our focus is always on the reading experience, which is why we developed our Guided View Technology that allows the user to go from panel to panel. We are always trying to author the comics to guide the reader through the comic as the creator intended. continued…

In honor of Black History Month, The Perseus Books Group and NBC News have teamed up to release an enhanced eBook version of Roots.

Perseus and NBC recently began working together on enhanced eBook apps.
Is $9.99 A Fair Price Point?

The debate about the right price for an eBook came up this morning at Digital Book World in New York when David Nussbaum, CEO of F+W Media asked a panel of publishing CEOs this question. The response? Fairly practical.

Brian Napack, CEO of Macmillan, said, “Every product has a price point. $9.99 is a fine price point, but some books will be less and some will be more. The fine art of being a publisher is going to be selecting the right price.”

Jane Friedman, CEO of Open Road Integrated Media agreed. “There is nothing wrong with the $9.99 price, if it works within the business model.”

David Steinberger, CEO of Perseus, pointed out that different prices have long been a part of print books. “People are not buying books, they are buying content. And they are asking themselves, is this a fair exchange for the price.”
