Samsung’s Galaxy S3 Was ‘World’s Best-Selling Smartphone’ in Q3 2012

Research firm Strategy Analytics reported that Samsung’s Galaxy S3 had topped Apple’s iPhone 4S as “the world’s best-selling smartphone” in the third quarter of 2012–the first time this has ever happened.

However, the company projects that iPhone 5 sales will top Samsung’s Galaxy S3 in the next quarter and once again dominate the world smartphone market. What do you think?

Check it out: “Samsung’s Galaxy S3 smartphone model shipped 18.0 million units worldwide during the third quarter of 2012. The Galaxy S3 captured an impressive 11 percent share of all smartphones shipped globally and it has become the world’s best-selling smartphone model for the first time ever … Apple shipped an estimated 16.2 million iPhone 4S units worldwide for second place, as consumers temporarily held off purchases in anticipation of a widely expected iPhone 5 upgrade at the end of the quarter.”

iPhone Purchase Intent Goes Down Slightly For First Time: Strategy Analytics

Eighty-eight percent of iPhone owners in the U.S. say they will buy their next smartphone from Apple, down from the 93 percent of iPhone owners who said they’d get their next phone from Apple, according to a new report from Strategy Analytics. This is the first time since Apple launched the device in 2007, that purchase intent for the iPhone has declined.

According to the report, 75 percent of iPhone owners in Western Europe say they are likely to buy their next phone from Apple, which is down from 88 percent in 2011.

“There is no doubt that Apple is continuing its success in retaining existing user base while attracting new customers,” said Paul Brown, director at strategy analytics’ User Experience Practice in a statement.  ”However, negative press prompted by a perceived lack of recent innovation by Apple has meant we are starting to see some growth in the number of previously highly loyal consumers who are now reconsidering whether or not they will purchase a new iPhone for their next device.” (Via Mashable).

Check it out: “A map must be comprehensive and accurate no matter where you are or what device you use. We also believe maps can be useful in ways you might not have imagined. With today’s release of Google Earth for iOS you can literally fly through breathtaking 3D city landscapes and images and follow virtual tours of places you’ve never been — all with a simple swipe of your fingertip. It’s a new, and I think magical way to explore the world in which we live.”

iPad Sales Increased 84% Last Quarter

Apple sold 17 million iPads in the third quarter of 2012, an 84 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Nevertheless, Bloomberg noted that profit was $9.32 a sharem, below Wall Street estimates: “Analysts had predicted profit of $10.37 a share on revenue of $37.2 billion, the average of estimates compiled by Bloomberg.”

At the same time, the company sold 26 million iPhones, those sales increasing 28 percent. Apple’s revenues were $35 billion for the quarter, with a tidy quarterly net profit of $8.8 billion.

Apple’s CFO Peter Oppenheimer had this comment in the release: “We’re continuing to invest in the growth of our business and are pleased to be declaring a dividend of $2.65 per share today … Looking ahead to the fourth fiscal quarter, we expect revenue of about $34 billion and diluted earnings per share of about $7.65.”
