‘Atlas Shrugged’ Released As App

Just in time for the GOP presidential campaign season, Ayn Rand‘s controversial text Atlas Shrugged is now available as an interactive iPad app from the Penguin Group.

The digital adaptation of the philosophic text of “Objectivism,” includes scans of the original manuscript pages and author’s notes, and video and audio excerpts from Rand’s lectures.

Penguin has been making their mark this year by creating interactive eBook apps for classic books. They are the publisher behind Jack Kerouac‘s On the Road app and Wreck This App, the digital version of Keri Smith’s bestselling Wreck This Journal. The Rand app is $14.99 (less than the $16.99 Kerouac app, more than the $7.99 Smith app).

The Penguin Atlas Shrugged app will compete with another interactive adaptation of the text from Blackstone Audio, which is available in iTunes for $16.99.

Penguin Launches Digital ‘On The Road’

Jack Kerouac‘s classic novel On the Road has a new life as a digital book app from Penguin Digital. The app includes the original 1957 novel, as well as a number of interactive features.

The app brings to life the road novel with interactive maps of Kerouac’s travels. Alongside Kerouac’s original sketches of his road map, Penguin Digital has created a map that brings to life the trip with quotes from the book about different cities and towns along the way. There is also a section about the author and the Beat generation. This includes biography, images from his family archives, audio recordings of the author speaking, videos of Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Carolyn Cassady talking about their friend,  and Kerouac’s statement on writing.

The app goes on sale in iTunes tomorrow. The iPad app will be on sale for $12.99 through July 2nd. (The price will go up to $16.99 after the sale).
