Amazon Adds Two More Authors to the Kindle Million Club

Amazon announced today that it was adding 2 new names today to its list of authors who’ve sold more than a million Kindle eBooks. Janet Evanovich, author of the Stephanie Plum series, and Kathryn Stockett, author of The Help, have each hit a million copies sold.

“Kathryn Stockett is the first debut novelist to join the Million Club, and Kindle customers were highly engaged with her book right from its publication,” said Russ Grandinetti, Vice President of Kindle Content. “It’s as exciting to see Kindle readers propel a new author’s career as it is to see them add to the success of a long-time Amazon best-selling author like Janet Evanovich.”

Kathryn Stockett made the list with her debut novel, The Help. The movie adaptation hit theaters last week. Janet Evanovich is the author of 12 romance novels, the Alexandra Barnaby novels and graphic novels, and How I Write: Secrets of a Bestselling Author.

HarperCollins Titles Absent From OverDrive’s Top Adult Fiction Downloads

Despite all of the controversy surrounding HarperCollins and eBooks at libraries, the publisher failed to make OverDrive’s ten most downloaded books from the library list in adult fiction for February 2011.

Knopf Doubleday’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson was most popular adult fiction title, followed by Knopf Doubleday’s The Confession by John Grisham and The Help by Kathryn Stockett from Penguin USA.

While the Crown Publishing Group dominated the most downloaded adult nonfiction lists with three eBooks in the top 4, HarperCollins only had one title on the list, Sh*t My Dad Says by Justin Halpern, which was No. 5.

In fact, HarperCollins books only made three of OverDrive’s various lists, with one title on the most popular adult nonfiction list, one title on the juvenile fiction list and one title on the most popular juvenile nonfiction list. HarperCollins’ I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore was the most popular juvenile fiction title and Justin Bieber by Justin Bieber was No. 4 on the most popular juvenile nonfiction download list.

Kathryn Stockett Loses 39% On eBook Royalty: Author’s Guild

Authors and publishers do not tend to agree on what is a fair royalty rate for an eBook. Publishers have set the standard at about 25%, but according to a panel at Digital Book World agents and authors think it should be 50%.

The Author’s Guild has a blog post on its site this week called, “E-Book Royalty Math: The House Always Wins,” arguing how authors are losing money on their eBook deals. In the post, the Author’s Guild calculated the gross profit (income per copy minus expenses per copy) for three popular titles to argue their case. Here is what they came up with:

The Help by Kathryn Stockett
Author’s Standard Royalty: $3.75 hardcover; $2.28 e-book.
Author’s E-Loss = -39%
Publisher’s Margin: $4.75 hardcover; $6.32 e-book.
Publisher’s E-Gain = +33%

Hell’s Corner by David Baldacci
Author’s Standard Royalty: $4.20 hardcover; $2.63 e-book.
Author’s E-Loss = -37%
Publisher’s Margin: $5.80 hardcover; $7.37 e-book.
Publisher’s E-Gain = +27%

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand
Author’s Standard Royalty: $4.05 hardcover; $3.38 e-book.
Author’s E-Loss = -17%
Publisher’s Margin: $5.45 hardcover; $9.62 e-book.
Publisher’s E-Gain = +77%
