Apple To Manufacture Macs In The U.S.

Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the news in an interview with Brian Williams which will air on NBC tonight.

Apple has faced criticism after Foxconn, a factory that manufacturers many of its products, has come under scrutiny for unsafe work conditions.
Here’s What Will Make The Apple TV Different

Apple CEO Tim Cook is interviewed by NBC News anchor Brian Williams tonight, and in a preview clip, he hints that Apple has something brewing in the TV space.

“When I go into my living room and turn on the TV, I feel like I have gone backwards in time by 20 to 30 years,” Cook told Williams. “It’s an area of intense interest. I can’t say more than that.”

As it happens, on Tuesday of this week, Les Moonves, the CEO of CBS, said that he met with Cook a few weeks ago, though he wouldn’t say about what. Last week, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes insinuated that he also met with Cook recently. Apple is clearly working on a TV product, but given the current state of TV sets and cable boxes, what would make it different?

The two keys are software and content.

An Apple TV set will undoubtedly feature the software that the Apple TV product currently has. It makes it easy to watch videos from Netflix and iTunes on your existing TV set. That said, at this moment in time, Apple needs to give customers access to the shows that want to watch in order to have a succesful product, that is the content side of the equation.

There are two ways to do this: partner with a cable or satellite company, or partner with the content companies themselves.

iTunes Now Offers 275,000 iPad Apps

Apple is unveiling one wonder after another in San Jose today, and Apple CEO Tim Cook just offered an update on the strength of their app store. iTunes now hosts over 700,000 apps for your iOS device with 275,000 designed specifically for iPad.

That latter number isn’t just the apps which “work” on the iPad (technically all iOS apps do), but only those which offer a specific iPad version which makes full use of the tablet’s larger screen.

One detail Tim didn’t mention but is worth noting is that iTunes’ overall growth in its selection of apps seems to have leveled off. It’s been just over a month since Apple unveiled the iPhone 5, and at that time Apple reported having 700 thousand apps and 250,000 which properly supported the iPad. So really today’s news is the increase in iPad apps; it looks like iTunes is merely treading water when it comes to the supply of apps as a whole.

An Alternate Explanation for the Apple Maps Debacle

Last Friday Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, formally apologized for Apple’s mistake in releasing Apple Maps before it was ready.

This is a topic we have covered several times at AppNewser, including one expert’s take on how it happened, but today I have a new explanation.

In the following video, the Apple Maps team leader explains how the strange map results aren’t incorrect; they’re just from alternate universes. Apple’s new Q6 quantum CPU sometimes gets data from other universes, including wibbly-wobbly world, water world, and more. continued…

Apple Sold More Than 5 Million iPhone 5s in Three Days

Apple sold more than five million new iPhones in three days, the company said today. Apple said that the demand was higher than the initial supply and said some customers will have to wait until October to receive their phones.

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO explained in this statement. “While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone.”

Businessweek pointed out that not having the inventory to support orders hurt the company’s stock price and explained analysts had expected more units to have sold. Here is more from the news site: “‘The number is lower than what people had expected,’ Brian White, an analyst at Topeka Capital Markets, said in an interview. He had estimated debut weekend sales of 6 million to 6.5 million units, excluding Internet purchases that haven’t been shipped. ‘This seems to be driven more by availability than demand.’” continued…

iPhone 5 Unveiled with 4-Inch Screen

At a press conference in San Francisco today, Apple unveiled its new iPhone 5, a new phone made of glass and aluminum, which is thinner, lighter and taller than previous models. The device comes with a new screen size, a new camera, new audio and a new charger, as compared to previous models. It costs $199 for a 16GB version, $299 for 32GB and $399 for 64GB with a two year contract. The phone goes on presale on Friday and ships September 21st in the U.S..

It is 18 percent thinner than previous models at 7.6mm and 20 percent lighter than the iPhone 4S at 112 grams. It has a 326 pixels per inch retina display with 1136 x 640 resolution and is taller than previous models. The screen, which has the same width as previous models, has five rows of icons in addition to the four shortcuts on the bottom of the screen. The new screen size is ideal for watching videos but will require apps to be optimized for the new size. For now, older apps will run letterboxed.

According to Engadget’s live blog, the device works with “ultrafast wireless,” a dynamic antenna that can automatically switch antenna connections to make the connections faster. The iPhone 5 also comes with a new A6 chip and is designed to be more energy efficient. The battery life has been expanded to support 8 hours of 3G or LTE talk time or 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing. The device will allow users to host Face Time calls over normal cellular networks (for participating carriers). continued…

App Advice has his resignation letter: “I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come. I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee. As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.”

Jobs (pictured, via) will be replaced by Tim Cook. Below, we’ve used Storify to collect Twitter commentary, links and a video of Jobs’ first triumph as a designer.
