Is the BlackBerry PlayBook Dead?

If you bought a Playbook when they went on sale earlier this week, you might want to send it back. A leak at one of RIMs Canadian partners suggests that the Playbook has been retired.

The Canadian gadget blog Mobile Syrup has posted a screen shot that they were sent from an inside source. It shows that Telus, a Canadian telecom, believes that all 3 Playbooks (16GB, 32GB, and 64GB) are EOLed and will no longer be accepted as returns. Telus put the Playbooks on sale at the same time as the sale in the US, so if you bought one from them you cannot return it.

What’s more, it seems likely that Telus would only mark the Playbook as EOL if RIM told them to. That means RIM has killed off the Playbook, and any units sold now should probably be regarded as unsupported hardware. There re rumors that RIM plans to release an update to the Playbook OS in the next few weeks, but I’m not sure that rumor is true anymore.

Last week back I posted a leaked slide that showed a new 3G equipped Playbook coming next year. I’m not sure that will happen either.

Update: The title of this post has been edited to reflect the fact that this is just an unconfirmed rumor; we don’t really know what will happen to the Playbook.
