Tired of Getting Phone Books? Opt Out

If you’re like me then you are probably already partly converted to a digital lifestyle. For example, I don’t look up phone numbers and addresses in a phone book anymore; Google is faster and better. That means I don’t need to have a phone book around, and I was thrilled today to learn that I could opt out of receiving one.

There’s a website where you can sign up and then opt out of receiving your local yellow pages and white pages. It seems to cover most of the US.

I think this is a great idea. For the past several years all I’ve done with my phone books is use them for kindling. I didn’t know there was a way to avoid getting them, and that was the best option I could think of (recycling would have wasted gas).

Unfortunately, you might end up receiving the phone books anyway. Consumerist is reporting this morning that one of their readers opted out 3 years ago and still gets a new phone book every year.
