Washington D.C. is America’s Most Literate City

DC has ranked as the most literate city in the US for the the second year in  row. Considering the fact that it appears that no one in Congress reads the laws they vote on, this is remarkable news. Seattle, Minneapolis, Atlanta, and Boston filled out the top 5. The list covers 75 cities in the US, and at the bottom are Fresno, Stockton, El Paso, Corpus Christi, and Bakersfield.

The rankings are based on a statistical survey conducted by Central Connecticut State University President Jack Miller. It factors in such details as newspaper circulation, the number of libraries and their circulation rates, number of bookstores, periodical publishing resources, what percentage of the population has advanced degrees, and Internet resources.

While I wouldn’t put any weight into this list (you can use stats to prove whatever you want) it does provide an interesting snap shop of current statistics. It also showed that wealth (or the lack if it) doesn’t influence literacy as much as you might think; Cleveland was among the poorest cities listed but ranked 13th in the overall list.
