When chief political correspondent Jacob Weisberg assumed the editor-in-chief mantle upon Kinsley's departure in 2002, he made expanding Slate's culture department one of his primary goals. Under Weisberg's direction, the magazine became a profitable enterprise, and it received a National Magazine Award for Online Excellence in 2003. In January 2005 The Washington Post bought Slate from Microsoft. In 2008, Weisberg became chairman and editor-in-chief of The Slate Group, a family of publications owned by The Washington Post Company including The Big Money, The Root, and Foreign Policy.
