About "Getting It Write," by Kristen Kemp (posted July 28) Kristen Kemp's latest "Getting It Write," on burning a bridge with an editor, was excellent—and it was very magnanimous of her to share this humbling experience with others. I'm glad to learn that, in the long run, her career wasn't derailed. Continued good luck to you, Kristen! —MaryBeth Guimaraes I wish all people in the magazine business were as responsible for their own fates as Kristen is. —Lori Jablons * * * About "Excerpt: Attack of the Political Cartoonists" (posted July 23) Did it ever occur to you that if you're touting a book of political cartoons that span the political spectrum, you should choose a selection that actually does that? All the examples shown were left-leaning, with the exception of Tom Toles—no friend of the right—though even his cartoon was neutral. Steve Kelley has been a GOP sympathizer in the past, but his offering, too, was critical of Bush. The problem with left-leaning marketing strategies is that they never mean what they say. Hey, you're supposed to be promoting "inclusiveness," remember? —Richard Reay * * * About "Survey Says: Outfoxed" (posted July 22) These survey results don't surprise me, but I'd like to know what proportion of respondents who didn't like Fox News were anything other than simply liberals voting along a party line. Most would consider me center-right, and I don't watch Fox News much, not because of any perception of it as partisan propaganda but rather because Fox is frequently behind on news—especially breaking news, which is still CNN's strong point. (Plus, I can only take so much of the happy-perky anchors.) The most astute respondent was the one who wondered if others could distinguish between O'Reilly and the daytime news reports. If you're at home during the day, as I am, you see that Fox anchors and correspondents are just slightly tweaking the news that everyone else is reporting, not really filtering it through a right-wing lens. —Greg Piper * * * About "Getting It Write," by Kristen Kemp (posted June 23) I just read Kristen Kemp's piece about how hard it is to motivate herself to do her freelance work, and all I can say is: It's 10:38 a.m., and reading this article was like reading my life. However, I am now even more determined to make this day different. (And so the cycle continues.) —Catherine Farquharson Phenomenal piece. Kristen Kemp told my story completely. —Kelly Cardiff Lopez mediabistro.com's Letters to the Editor column runs every other Friday. You may submit your letters to letters@mediabistro.com.
