Just 55 days short of its 150th anniversary, the
Rocky Mountain News is no more: The paper
published its final issue today. It has been for sale since December, but no buyers emerged. (There was one, but after learning it would cost $100 million to keep the paper afloat, the unnamed company -- wisely -- backed off.) Scripps lost $16 million on the
News in 2008, and projections for 2009 were worse. Readers
expressed their support on the paper's Web site, but the advertising climate couldn't support two dailies in Denver.
