Media Hiring in a Recovering Economy
Experts explain how media companies can cut through the confusion of hiring in an improving economic environment- July 28, 2009
As the economy recovers, everything is still up in the air for media companies, many of which had to lay off masses of workers as the financial markets froze. SimplyHired.com reports that between September 2007 and February 2009, media jobs have decreased by 18 percent -- though it seems like much more. So what should these companies do to get back on their feet as things thaw out? That depends on who you ask.
Adam Armbruster, a partner at Eckstein, Summers, Armbruster & Company, a broadcast television consulting company, says it is important to involve top talent in managerial decisions so they don't get swiped up by competitors when the economy starts to improve -- because everyone will be on the hunt for the best candidates once they can comfortably hire associates again. "If you've been paying your talent well all along, that means it's worth investing more to keep them on your team now," he says.
With so much talk about layoffs, many companies are probably still fuzzy-headed over the concept of hiring -- but it is a big issue as the economy picks up. Luckily, there are many ways to get the talent you need and still stick to that strict budget....
