Background: Good Fruit Grower was started as a private publication in 1946 to cover the tree fruit industry in Washington state but was purchased the following year by the Fruit Commission. The magazine's purpose has always been to fulfill grower education expectations of the state. "We're quite unique, I think, because we function as a stand-alone, self-supporting business within a state agency," says managing editor James Black, noting that the magazine's mission is to promote the sustainability of tree fruit and grape producers worldwide by fostering the exchange of information and cultivating a sense of community. "We have no editorial control by either the state or the growers but function in an ideal relationship, where we are expected to always be truthful and comprehensive in our coverage. In the 17 years I've worked here, only twice have I been encouraged to change content, and neither time was our integrity compromised." ...
