Background: TheYBF.com (Young, Black & Fabulous) launched in 2005 after Natasha Eubanks, then a Loyola University law student and avid blog reader, noticed a void in the online coverage of her favorite African-American stars. Now considered one of the most popular gossip blogs, and sites targeting the African-American demographic overall, TheYBF.com features all-encompassing coverage of Black Hollywood, including red carpet events, charity functions, and new music releases, and has since grown into its own brand. Eubanks contributes a daily gossip report to the syndicated urban morning radio show Big Boy's Neighborhood and was recently featured in Black Enterprise as one of America's fastest-rising entrepreneurs.
"YBF is a lifestyle. It is not just celebrity gossip anymore. It's about putting Black Hollywood on a pedestal. If you want to imitate it, respect it, or see what the most fabulous Black people in Hollywood are doing -- then here you go," says Eubanks.
While promoting the fabulous life, some of TheYBF.com's biggest stories have ironically been about the entertainment industry's dark side. Eubanks points to the site's popular "We Broke It First" section, where she reported on Usher's divorce from wife Tameka Raymond, singer Kelly Rowland's dumping longtime manager Matthew Knowles, and the first cell phone photos of Alicia Keys kissing producer Swizz Beatz. (Swizz was reportedly still married at the time.)
