Background: In January 2008, then-Senator Barack Obama was in a tooth-and-nail battle with Senator Hillary Clinton over the Democratic Party's Presidential nomination. It was the beginning of a pivotal and historic era in American politics and society in general, culminating in Obama's election as the first African-American president of the United States of America.
In the midst of the hubbub, and riding high on the groundswell of pride and honor felt among most members of the black community, Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and Donald Graham, chairman of The Washington Post, partnered to launch The Root, an online publication covering the nation's biggest news stories -- with an African-American angle. "The idea was to bring smart, thoughtful pieces that bring a black perspective to the news of the day and reflect the conversations that black people are having," explained Lauren Williams, The Root's deputy editor.
