Background: Started in 1994, Parent & Child, the self-described "learning link between home and school," is part of the global Scholastic children's publishing, education and media company. It aims to give moms and dads engaging information on topics relevant to raising a child from birth to age 12. Topics can range from covering the latest autism findings, to how to deal with behavioral and developmental issues like sharing or bullying, to the most affordable places to take a family vacation.
"The overall tone of the magazine," says editor-in-chief Nick Friedman, "is very much embodied in our tagline: 'The Joy of Family Living and Learning.' We understand that raising a child can be difficult, challenging and expensive at times; we try to present articles that inspire and provide suggestions for making the job more organic within the family structure. Notice the word 'suggestions': We believe that parents know their children better than anyone, and we want to support them by encouraging them to trust their parenting instincts. Thus we avoid using imperatives in our articles. You won't find 'you should do this' or 'you need to tell your kids...' We also try not to alarm parents or scare them. Instead we try to reassure them. You might say we take a long-term view of parenting, as opposed to a quick fix mentality."...

The How to Pitch series is worth its weight in gold. In just the first month I'd already benefited enough to consider the cost of joining well worth it.
