Background: Pitch with the 30-something mom of an elementary-schooler in mind to win over this sharp, forward-thinking parenting magazine from the global Scholastic children's publishing, education and media company. "Life with a 5- to 10-year-old is exciting and fun -- but unpredictable," says editor in chief Jane Nussbaum. "Once they reach school age, kids are really becoming their own people, and the issues that crop up around their education and development can be complicated. We want bold ideas that speak to the unique experience of raising 'big kids' with intelligence and humor. When there's new evidence behind it, we're not afraid to ruffle a few feathers by questioning the conventional parenting wisdom of the past decade or so."
Parent & Child aims, in particular, to give moms and dads engaging, eye-opening information on topics relevant to their child's education. Nussbaum points out that basic service stories on discipline or potty training tips abound on the Web, "so we want to go deeper to cover important issues that have a surprising impact on kids' success in school and beyond." In the past year that has meant reports on rising rates of anxiety among kids and how this affects their performance in school; an investigation questioning the standard protocol for dealing with bullying; and the many classroom benefits of mindfulness training for children.
