Forbes Poaches New Crop of Writers; Laura Ling Lands E! Show

October 12, 2010
For the second consecutive quarter, magazine ad pages are up, with a 3.6 percent jump in the last three months. Year over year, ad pages show a 2.6-percent improvement. Of course, that's still well away from their peak and only begins compensating for the 17.5 percent drop in 2009. Automotive ad pages led the way, flying up 40 percent. Individual winners include Elle Décor (up 56 percent), People StyleWatch (54 percent), and Black Enterprise (45 percent). The list of losers starts with Country Living (down 30 percent) and Maxim (24 percent). Newsweek also dropped nearly 20 percent...

The New York Times Magazine continues to hire. Ten days after installing Hugo Lindgren atop the masthead, the Sunday publication grabs Lauren Kern for its deputy editor spot. She had been executive editor at O, The Oprah Magazine, but worked at New York where Lindgren also previously served... In addition to poaching Jeff Bercovici from AOL's Daily Finance, Forbes snags Nicholas Sabloff from Huffington Post, Halah Touryalai from Registered Rep, and author Zack O'Malley Greenburg. The foursome will all be staff writers. Above the Law editor Kashmir Hill comes aboard as a writer... Liz Brody of Yahoo! Shine moves to Glamour as editor-at-large... ABC Family's Karen Williams leaves for the vice president of sales and marketing spot at Essence... American Media Inc. promotes John Swider to president and CEO. He replaces the departing Mike Porche... Trevor Jacobson is Nylon's new fashion director, leaving the House that Si Built... Marjorie Miller, who previously served as foreign policy editor and op-ed correspondent at the Los Angeles Times, heads to the Associated Press as Latin America/Caribbean editor... Laura Ling lands at E!, where she'll host E! Investigates...

Marissa Mayer scores a promotion to Google's operating committee. The bump is pretty much in name only, as she already holds significant sway with CEO Eric Schmidt and other decision makers... Michael Walsh will write a book instead of continuing to toil at Andrew Breitbart's Big Journalism... Richard Horgan jumps into FishbowlLA... And there are changes at Yoga Journal, Art + Auction, and more...
