Carol Smith Exits Conde; Bon Appetit Names New EIC

October 29, 2010
Carol Smith leaves Condé Nast, and some see it as a sign of chaos at the top of the major mag publisher. Smith's rather terse statement about her departure: "The opportunity turned out not to be what either Condé Nast or I expected." She had been publisher of Bon Appétit and Gourmet, a job that William Wackermann will assume. In the past year, Richard Beckman, David Carey, and Thomas A. Florio have all walked away from Condé. Is something wrong at 4 Times Square? Perhaps it's the jargon-laden memos Charles Townsend keeps circulating. Meanwhile, Adam Rapoport moves over from GQ to take the EIC spot at Bon Appétit...

WSJ. recruits Andrew Cenname as its publisher. He previously served as the Journal's multimedia sales director for the Luxury group and was vice president and advertising director of Travel + Leisure before that... Dan Berrett joins Inside Higher Ed as a reporter. He had been education reporter at Pocono Record... Teen Vogue taps Melissa Gilligan Consorte as sales development director. She comes over from Shape... Christie Griffin trades her senior Web editor gig at Cosmopolitan for a digital director spot at Fitness...

Les Moonves and Katie Couric haven't begun discussing a contract extension for the anchorwoman... Mike Lang moves to Miramax as CEO. He left News Corp. in February... Tammy Chase, the spokeswoman responsible for relaying information about layoffs at the Sun-Times, loses her job. She had been with the Sun-Times Media Group for 10 years... New York Times Saturday deputy business editor Patty Kranz leaves to join Morgan Stanley and, presumably, score a massive pay raise... The National Geographic Society bumps John Fahey to chairman and installs Timothy T. Kelly in his president position...

More than 2,000 Yahoos get a new boss. Ross Levinsohn steps in as EVP of the company's Americas Region. He previously served as president of Fox Interactive Media. While at News Corp., he convinced Rupert Murdoch to plunk down cash for MySpace... AOL taps head Jon Dube as general manager of AOL News... GamePro Media lands the San Francisco Bay Guardian's Richard Chua as account executive... Moxie Interactive hires four new employees for positions including producer, media planner, and resource director... And there are changes at Ketchum, IntelliChoice, and more...
