Background: WCBS-AM signed on the air as an all-news format on August 28, 1967. However, the call letters date back to 1946 when CBS moved to round-the-clock news as a direct result of WINS becoming the first all-news station two years earlier. The once bitter rivals are now both owned by CBS Radio.

While its focus is live reporting on New York, be it news, traffic, weather or sports, WCBS-AM is so much more. Using CBS News as a resource, the station airs network news at the top of every hour and is also the flagship station of the New York Yankees. News director Tim Scheld says that the stories that most resonate with his listeners are those that also affect the masses: taxes, education, politics, and crime. Yet, when it comes to figuring out who's listening, he leaves that to his sales department.

"We don't look at what stories do 25-54 year olds have an interest in," Scheld says. "We're living in a city in the tri-state area and looking at what is important to people in our community."...
