Pitching An Agent: Judith Ehrlich Literary Management LLC

This agency seeks narrative nonfiction, memoirs and self-help books from seasoned writers

- April 5, 2011

Number of agents: Three
Number of clients: 55
Notable clients: Marcella Burnard, Michael Lindsay-Hogg, Jeffrey H. Jackson, Alissa Johnson, Catherine McCall
Amount of unsolicited material selected: Five percent
Fiction vs. Nonfiction: 50 percent fiction; 50 percent nonfiction

Background: Judith Ramsey Ehrlich began her career as an author and journalist for several national magazines, even scoring an ABC movie, The Long Way Back, based on one of her features. But it was joining the advisory board of the Partisan Review and meeting literary agent Linda Chester that precipitated Ehrlich's move into the business end of book publishing. After sending Chester one book project after another, she was eventually hired to work with her firm as senior associate. There, Ehrlich was allowed to represent a variety of talented authors and shepherd their projects from sale through publication before launching her own boutique agency in 2002.

Today, Ehrlich runs Judith Ehrlich Literary Management LLC as a full-service boutique firm out of New York alongside fellow agents Emmanuelle Morgen and Sophia Seidner. The company represents a diverse group of clients, including award-winning fiction and nonfiction writers, academics who made the crossover to adult trade books, a film director who's written a memoir, a playwright who's penned a historical gilded-age novel, and a few CEOs.
