Pitching An Agent: The Croce Agency

This "entrepreneurial" agency is looking exclusively for commercial fiction

- June 14, 2011

Number of agents: One
Number of clients: 10
Notable clients: Susan Higginbotham, Brandy Purdy, Erik Rush, C. Allyn Pierson and Clem Chambers
Amount of unsolicited material selected: Five percent
Fiction vs. Nonfiction: 100 percent commercial fiction

Background: Nicholas Croce has been immersed in the book publishing industry for 10 years, working as an editor, managing editor, publisher and agent. He started in the editorial department at John Wiley & Sons before becoming managing editor at a mid-sized New York publisher. Eventually, he founded an eponymous press, which was named by Writer's Digest as one of the top 50 publishers for first-time authors; ABC and CNN have also featured his titles. Finally, deciding to combine his editing expertise, passion for fiction, and entrepreneurial know-how, he founded the Croce Agency in 2007.

Since launching the agency, Croce's clients have appeared on the London Times bestseller list and on the top 100 bestsellers lists from Amazon and BN.com. Despite these notable successes, Croce continues to develop innovative methods of marketing and branding his authors. For example, he has recently been working with Internet solutions firm iAnalyst to promote authors across social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Digg and Foursquare. Croce's sole focus and passion for commercial fiction also enables him to stay apprised of changes in the genre. "The best quality you can have in an agent is enthusiasm," he explains.
