A Coup For Al Jazeera; Bleacher Report Gets Legit

August 23, 2011

Big moves in network news. NBC News recruits Al Jazeera's Ayman Mohyeldin. The AJE star will be The Peacock's newest foreign correspondent. His new position signals yet another sign that the place he leaves is becoming a legitimate channel in the United States. It's a coup for Al Jazeera and Mohyeldin and a great hire for NBC News. The network, however, loses Lee Cowan to CBS News. He came from The Eye in 2007. At NBC, he covered the Obama campaign before moving to the Los Angeles bureau...

Fox News Channel gives the weekend afternoon anchor slot at America's News Headquarters to Heather Childers. She joined the network in February... Brian Kenny will say goodbye to SportsCenter. There are rumors he's headed to MLB Network, which would be a big score for the growing and improving network... Vince Cellini is the new host of NBA GameTime. He will also host College Football Preview Show on NCAA.com... American Public Media taps Deborah Clark as executive producer of Marketplace. She takes over for the promoted JJ Yore, who is the show's general manager...

Patrick Day moves to The Hollywood Reporter as deputy editor of the website. He founded the Los Angeles Times' The Envelope blog...  Roll Call loses Emily Heil to the Washington Post. She'll work on the national staff, writing "In the Loop" with Al Kamen... Trish Wilson is the new deputy Latin America and Caribbean editor at Associated Press. She leaves from the Philadelphia Inquirer, where she was assistant managing editor... After 128 years, American Printer closes its doors. "Ultimately, there was no foreseeable model to achieve profitability," editor Katherine O'Brien wrote in a blog post announcing the news... The American Society of News Editors cuts four full-time positions...

Bleacher Report takes a huge step toward legitimacy, starting a Lead Writer program and recruiting Bethlehem Shoals, Dan Levy and three others to the positions. This follows on the heels of the King Kaufman hire in January and it is a big symbol of the site's outsized ambitions... Todd Bradley really wants out of HP. The Personal Systems Group head wants to be CEO somewhere else... And there are changes at Artspan.com and more...
