Trouble for Occupy D.C. Spokeswoman; The Village Drops Two Voices

October 21, 2011
Radio host Lisa Simeone gets fired from one gig but keeps another after The Daily Caller wrote a story naming her as the spokeswoman for "October 2011," the Washington D.C. spin-off of Occupy Wall Street. Simeone will no longer host Soundprint, a weekly show on NPR affiliate WAMU. However, after some speculation that she might lose her other gig as host of World of Opera which originates at fellow NPR affiliate WDAV, the station now says it will stand by her. Simeone, who compared her firing to "McCarthyism," previously worked as the weekend host of All Things Considered. Michael Caruso gets the top job at Smithsonian. He's only the fourth editor-in-chief in 41 years. Caruso was working at WSJ. for the past six months and previously ran Men's Journal... Mike Federle takes over as COO at Forbes Media. He previously served as president and publisher of Fortune. The move -- hiring someone from outside the Forbes family -- shows that minority owner Elevation Partners is running the show... Andy Goodenough leaves as CEO of Summit Business Media... Alex Wagner lands a show on MSNBC...

The Village Voice lays off Ward Harkavy and Harry Siegel because of financial reasons. Siegel, who just recently joined, wrote a beautiful essay for the paper's "Best of NYC" issue. The parent company is experiencing layoffs across the board... USA Today loses managing editor Carol Stevens. She joins the Bar Association where she'll work as media relations director... Politico snags Ginger Gibson as national politics reporter. She comes over from the New Jersey Star-Ledger... The Daily Caller fires two reporters and loses its managing editor... The Times of London cuts one out of every seven editorial jobs...

Yahoo shakes up its marketing department. CMO Elisa Steele, who wrote the memo, might be out or might get a different job... Scott Moore leaves his job as head of MSN's U.S. portal. He has another gig lined up, but what that is remains to be seen... And there are changes at CNN, Cineflix and more...
