Times CEO Retires; Amanpour To Leave This Week

December 16, 2011
Janet Robinson is retiring as CEO of The New York Times Company. She will remain on as a consultant for a year and receive $4.5 million. Arthur Sulzberger Jr. will assume the top spot on an interim basis. Robinson's most obvious successor is current Times president and general manager Scott Heekin-Canedy. Another name supposedly floating around is Andrew Ross Sorkin, which would be shocking if it were true. (The real question, however, is why the Times didn't have a successor lined up. What exactly went down leading to Robinson's departure?)...

Christiane Amanpour is leaving This Week. She will remain with ABC, hosting six primetime specials a year and also return to CNN International. George Stephanopoulos regains his chair on This Week and will continue as host of Good Morning America as well. (Gawker wants Jake Tapper to take over as permanent host, and we're not sure that's a bad idea.) During Amanpour's tenure, the program slipped to a regular third behind Meet the Press and Face the Nation...

The Los Angeles Times loses another editor as Russ Stanton resigns. John Carroll, Dean Baquet and James O'Shea left the top spot before Stantion, citing the ongoing and never-ending pressure to cut staff as the reason. The newsroom shrunk from 900 to 550 during the latest editor's tenure, and more cuts are coming. Current managing editor for news Davan Maharaj replaces Stanton... Conde Nast taps Jo Ann Murray as senior vice president of human resources. She had been SVP of global HR at Reader's Digest Association...

Bill Simmons snags Mark Lisanti as pop culture editor for Grantland. The Defamer founder joins the ESPN property after getting cut when Yahoo decided to kill its entertainment blogs. He replaces Lane Brown, who recently returned to New York... Josh Topolsky's very good The Verge hires WinRumors' Tom Warren to cover the Microsoft beat... The New York Times hires KJ Dell'Antonia to take over the Motherlode blog while it fights with the Huffington Post over the name... AOL's Patch is cutting sales people, and the rank and file are upset... Lot18, the wine and gourmet food flash sales site, grabs Mark Pinney as chief financial officer. He previously worked as COO of Tremor Video. Andrew Koch and Jane Kim are also coming on board as vice president of product and vice president of strategic development, respectively. Lot18, which raised $45 million in VC funding, has some cash to spend... And there are changes at Glamour, CBS News and more...
