The Beast Reorgs; "More Exposure" for FBN

February 10, 2012
Tina Brown reorgs the top of The Daily Beast. Jane Spencer, founding member and current executive editor, departs (although she'll stay on as international editor-at-large) with Deidre Depke filling her position. Depke had been an editor at Newsweek.com before jumping to TheWeek.com. Tom Watson gets a bump to managing editor, while Louise Roug returns to the position of foreign editor. It's a credit to Brown and TDB that her former employees are willing to return, but you also have to wonder why they left in the first place. A bit of burnout, perhaps?...

Is there trouble at Politico? Charles Hoskinson leaves the D.C. venture to join The Navy Times as managing editor. Meanwhile, Sara Libby jumps from her deputy politics editor spot to Talking Points Memo where she'll be an associate editor. They are the latest to jump ship. Trend watch? Maybe, but certainly shots fired... Brett Nelson departs Forbes after 14 years with the magazine. He is the executive editor... Time recruits Harry McCracken as editor-at-large. He founded Technologizer...

Big doings at Fox Business News: Judge Andrew Napolitano, David Asman and Eric Bolling are out in primetime. The move is designed to give "more exposure" to the struggling network's biggest names, as FBN will repeat airings of Gerri Willis, Neil Cavuto and Lou Dobbs in the 8-11 p.m. slot... Ron Wechsler signs on as vice president, original programming, at NBC Sports Network. He had been developing content for ESPNU. Elsewhere at the Peacock Extended, CNBC poaches Jim Ackerman as senior vice president of primetime alternative programming... Craig Ferguson is preparing to sign a contract that will keep him at CBS through 2014. So, hooray?...

AOL hires Rachel Fishman Feddersen as head of Patch's editorial operations. The former Parenting Group executive comes in above editor-in-chief Brian Farnham. Meanwhile, Jim Romenesko hears Patch is planning layoffs, a rumor quickly squashed by AOL's PR. In other Tim Armstrong-related news, Greg Kumparak leaves TechCrunch after four years. He's the latest in a long line to run away... BuzzFeed hires away Amy Odell from New York, where she had been heading up The Cut fashion blog. She will start a similar vertical at the aggregator, although exactly what it will look like remains unknown (even to Odell and executive editor Doree Shafrir)... And there are changes at Groupon, Hearst and more...
