AOL Layoff Rumors Answered; Murdoch Steps Down

AOL is preparing to chop a bunch of jobs, although not the "hundreds" reported by Sarah Lacy at PandoDaily. The scoop, via Business Insider: "The purpose of these firings is not cost-cutting. People are getting let go because consumers are not using the products produced by AOL's West Coast team -- About.me, Editions, etc. -- and 'the accountability train has arrived.'" That is good news for the Patch division and the rest of the Huffington Post...

James Murdoch steps down as head of News International. He will remain in the deputy chief operating officer role at News Corp., where he will focus on growing the international television business. Is it Lachlan Murdoch's time to step up?... Anthony Weiner was reportedly in talks with CNN to host a new show with Andrew Breitbart, who passed away on Thursday. The Daily Mail is the source, so take it with a grain of salt. (Case in point.)... Toledo's WUPW will part ways with 63 staffers. American Spirit Media is buying the station...

New York sees a future in design magazines. It is launching a stand-alone book called New York Design Hunting, named after design editor Wendy Goodman's weekly newsletter. She will edit the publication that launches in May and will likely have future issues... Time Inc.'s Laura Lang decides against changing too much on the editorial side of the company, re-upping John Huey's contract... Brides poaches W senior fashion features editor Dana Wood to be beauty director...

The New York Post loses longtime Web editor Erle Norton. He joins Reuters, where he'll help former colleague Dan Colarusso with a new YouTube channel as well as Reuters Insider and a video distribution service. The Post also sees William Gorta depart to join DNAinfo. Leela de Krester, another Post alum, will be his boss... The OC Register lays off Yvette Cabrera, who was voted best columnist by the Orange County Press Club. Journos on the West Coast are stunned by the news...

Buzzfeed gets a single-serving site dedicated to whether it has hired anyone today. The answer, frequently, is yes. Hillary Reinsberg joins from Abrams Media to write about "lady things." We're hearing some other hires are in the works as well... And there are changes at Forbes, NBC Universal and more...
