WaPo's 'Surprising Hire'; Yahoo! Braces For Layoffs

The Washington Post Company hires Slashdot founder Rob Malda as chief strategist and editor-at-large of the WaPo Labs. ReadWriteWeb calls the move a bet on the future, while Nieman Lab writes, "it's a surprising hire (and a marketing coup)." Malda will initially help the small Labs team improve its Social Reader and Trove products but plans to expand soon. Elsewhere at WaPo Co., Ken Babby leaves after 12 years. He had been chief revenue officer and general manager for digital (not bad for a guy who started as an intern) but wants to "pursue other digital ventures."...

The USA Today asks all its sports newsroom staffers to reapply for their jobs. That includes around 90 people, including the managing editor... The New York Observer adds to its growing magazine offerings by hiring Carl Gaines to edit its new The Commercial Mortgage Observer, a spinoff of The Commercial Observer. That title!... Details poaches Star, snagging Greg Emmanuel as articles editor. He had been deputy editor, features, at the tabloid...

Yahoo is preparing massive layoffs. Kara Swisher hears they will target the product group as well as public relations, marketing, research and a few other areas. It is the kind of dramatic action pundits and Wall Street alike have been wanting for months, and credit should go to new CEO Scott Thompson for not shying away. The question is whether he will cut the correct groups. The media unit could avoid job losses, although the plan is not fully complete yet. Expect more information in the coming weeks...

Foursquare co-founder Naveen Selvadurai leaves the company. According to an unnamed source, he "seemed frustrated" by his role... Fab.com hires Scott Ballantyne as global chief marketing officer. He had been chief marketing officer at Vonage. Fab CEO Jason Goldberg on the hire: "Scott's awesome. He's got the right mix of experience, passion and charisma. He's Fab."... Instagram hires its ninth employee, engineer Ryan Gomba. For those of you counting at home, that's one staffer for every 2.8 million users... Deadspin snags Erik Malinowski as night editor. The San Francisco-based former Wired.com contributor recently wrote a long, awesome tale about a Simpsons episode for the site... John Oldakowski joins Cheezburger.com as senior account executive.
